10:58 pm - Hello...:)
My name is Lene and I am from Denmark. I am 20 years old and at the moment I am trying to write a novel. I also write poetry and short stories. I am really shy about my poetry because I don't like what I write. Most of my poetry is born in anger or in sorrow and I don't like that myself. But I still want to know what other people think about my work... If i should just forget averything about being a poet or if I should go on.. :)

Smiles from

hi Lene, i read your entry about writing poetry and i think what you're dealing with is a common problem in writers. there is always the stage where one is unsure about their work, not quite secure in it. i think what you'll find is that as you read more poetry and continue to write, the 'anger' and 'sorrow' will not be at the forefront of the poem anymore. those emotions may still remain in your poems, but you'll learn to put them across in other ways, more creative ways. don't give up on poetry. may i suggest a couple of poets you could have a look at? Tomas Transtromer, John Ashbery, Tomas Salamun, John Berryman. these poets have very different styles, but all of them contain human emotion and put it across in a way that it very compelling and luring. i have been writing for years, yet i still face the same battle you are facing as far as toning down the personal emotion or putting it across in a new and fresh way. it takes time, but with time comes a payoff. allow yourself to write freely, associate words freely, forget sometimes about the 'rules' that are given to poetry. you are the poet, you make the rules, nobody else. allow yourself to spill forth into the poem, but do it in a way that makes the reader want to work, to read your poem over and over, and enjoy it more with each read. feel free to email me if you want to talk more or you can post on my blog. best of luck.
